NEW HAMPSHIRE
Census Reports
1790 – 1840
===============
In
the 1790 census, the columns in the report are for males over 16, males under
16 and females of all ages.
In
the 1800 and 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15,
16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
In
the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and
older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
In
the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10-14,
15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
From
1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. In the actual 1880 census places of
birth are listed for the person, their father and their mother. In the 1880
Soundex only families with children 10 and under are listed. In the 1900 and
later Soundex reports, all families are listed. As with most of the northern
states, there is no index for 1870 or 1910, and of course, the 1890 census was
destroyed by fire.
In
trying to determine exactly who these folks are, I will use when possible the
numbering system used by Eben Putnam in his 1908 book
on the family. This way you can easily look them up for more info and for their
lineage back to John Putnam, the immigrant to Massachusetts.
I will
list these families by county, rather than alphabetically, through the 1860
census. Without anything but the name of the head of the household, it helps to
see who lives near each other. I’ll list them the way they appear in the
census, again too show proximity.
In
the 1790 census, the columns in the report are for males under 16, males over
16 and females of all ages.
Listing
is 1-2-5. He is Ebenezer Junior (443) a son of Ebenezer Putnam (184) and Mary
Parker of Billerica, Massachusetts and then Charlestown, New Hampshire. Eben Senior came to Charlestown very early on, perhaps in
the early to mid 1740s, with his parents Seth Putnam (49) and Ruth Whipple. Eben Senior had died here February 2, 1782. Young Eben was born here in Charlestown January 25, 1751/52
(remember until 1753, the New Year began March 1st. So Eben was really born in 1752 in today’s calendar, but in
1751 in the old one). He married Hannah Russell here in Charlestown. Eben served in Captain William Carcy’s
New Hampshire Company during the Revolution. Well to make it interesting, Eben seems to be caught on moving day. He is also listed in
1790 in Middlesex, Chittenden (now in Washington) County, Vermont where he will
spend the rest of his life. In Vermont, he is listed 1-3-5, so his last son,
Calvin, was born in Vermont. The move would have taken place in June or July of
1790. Eben’s brothers Seth, Jacob, and Levi had all left Charlestown a little
bit earlier, and they too are now in Middlesex, Vermont. For more on Ebenezer,
his brothers and their families, go check out the Vermont section. This line
goes back from this Ebenezer (443) > Ebenezer (184) > Seth (49) >
Thomas > Thomas > John Putnam.
Listing
is 1-0-1. Another son of Timothy and Susannah Putnam. He is number 466, born
June 14, 1762. He married Ruth Spencer here on November 15, 1789. There first
child, Roswell, will arrive in a few months in November 1790. By the late
1790s, the family will be in Weathersfield, Windsor County, Vermont. While
there, he will serve in the War of 1812. After the war, he will return to
Charlestown, and he will die December 20, 1848 here in Charlestown. Ruth will
die here March 21, 1855.
Listing
is 1-1-2. He is one of Seth’s kids. He is number 189, and was born in
Billerica, Massachusetts October 22, 1728, and will die here August 20, 1814 at
the age of 85. He married Rachel Weatherbee of
Charlestown. She was born April 3, 1733 and will die June 12, 1812. He fought
in the French and Indian wars in the early 1750s. When finished he moved south
to Lunenburg, Massachusetts where things were a tad calmer. In 1759, he and the
family returned to Charlestown and settled on his original farm. They moved to
Acworth, just south of Charlestown, in 1771. They lived there throughout the
1770s. He was a justice of the peace, built the first gristmill, became a
deacon of the church, and was town moderator and selectman through the latter
1770s during the war. He fought in Revolution at Bennington among other places.
After the war, he moved to Charlestown where he will remain. Again, he should
have more children listed, or they should be listed somewhere, as he had some
sixteen kids in total. The sons all appear here in 1800 though. His son Thomas
junior is presently in Windsor, Vermont.
Listing
is 1-0-3. Now we have another family, although Tim’s father was also Seth
Putnam. Timothy is number 191. He was born in Billerica, Massachusetts on
December 25, 1732. He married Susanna Badger here. The IGI states it was in
Salem, Massachusetts on December 19, 1760, but that is wrong. His first child
was born here in October 1760. This listing is also not right. His sons David
and Bailey should be at home, as they don’t get married for a few more years.
He had over a dozen children all told. His line goes back Timothy > Seth
> Thomas > Thomas > John Putnam.
Listing
is 2-3-3. Timothy’s son. He is number 465. He was born here in Charlestown
October 4, 1760 and will remain here until his death in 1835. He married Sarah
Hewitt here October 4, 1778. The girls at home are Sarah, and daughters Sarah
and Betsy. He served in the Revolution in Col. Benjamin Bellows Regt. The sons
are Timothy 3rd, Abraham, Samuel. The older male is probably his
brother Bailey. He had fourteen kids in all.
Listing
is 2-3-4. He is number 545, a son of Stephen and Mary. He was born in Sutton,
Massachusetts July 17, 1755 and will remain here in Claremont till his death in
the 1820s. He married Miriam Elmer. The sons at home are Zelotus,
Chester and John. The other adult male must be his brothers, David and Rufus,
both of whom will be here in 1800.
Listing
is 3-0-5. Daniel is number 228, a son of Isaac Putnam (58) and Anna Fuller of
Salem, Topsfield, and then Sutton, Massachusetts. His line goes back Daniel
> Isaac > Edward > Thomas > John Putnam. Daniel was born in Sutton
March 28, 1739 and died in Cornish in 1809. He married Anna Chase of Sutton on
June 25, 1761. Daniel was an early comer to New Hampshire, arriving in 1764. He
served in the New Hampshire Continental Line during the Revolution from 1777
till 1781, reaching the rank of Captain. He was a town selectman in 1784. His
only two sons, Samuel and Isaac, are still at home. He will be here until he
dies in 1809.
Listing
is 2-3-4. Caleb is number 492, a son of Edward Putnam (194) and Ruth Fuller of
Middleton and then Sutton, Massachusetts. Caleb was born in Sutton October 27,
1754. He married Judith Sibley in Sutton August 21, 1776. In 1780-81, Caleb and
his brother David came from Sutton to Croydon. In 1785, Caleb was town
constable and later held other public offices. He bought his first farm in 1780
and another 100 acres in 1784. The sons shown in this census are Caleb, Samuel,
Edward and Hiram. His last son, Peter, will be born in 1795. His line goes back
Caleb > Edward > Edward > Edward > Thomas > John Putnam.
Listing
is 1-1-6. Caleb’s brother (491), and another of Edward and Ruth’s children. He
was born in Sutton July 1st, 1752. He will remain here until his
death March 21, 1840. He married Phebe Woodbury of Beverly and then Sutton.
They were married in Sutton July 3, 1776. The son shown here is Solomon. His
next son, David will be born in 4 months on October 2, 1790 and his last son
John, will come on November 11, 1797. David served in the Revolution while
living in Sutton. He was a selectman during the 1780s and 1790s, and held a
great many more offices. His line is, of course, the same as his brother
Caleb’s.
Listing
is 1-0-3. Timothy’s son. He is number 467, born here June 4, 1764. He married
Catherine Case in 1785. She died in about 1808. He then married Peggy Glidden
(widow of Moses Willard of Charlestown) in March 1810. He then moved to
Montpelier, Vermont where the next child was born in 1811. He moved briefly to
Springfield, Vermont and then returned to Montpelier about 1819. He will die in
Montpelier, Vermont June 9, 1848; Peggy will die there February 19, 1852 at the
home of her son John Glidden Putnam of East Montpelier. The daughters shown
here are Mary and Catherine, the son is George.
Listing
is 1-2-2. Jonathan was born April 23, 1750 in Bedford, Middlesex County, Mass.
There are land records that he bought lands here in Rindge in 1874. He married
Lucy Lane there on November 23, 1775. They moved to Rindge. From there he
enlisted in the Continental Army and fought at Lexington, Ticonderoga and other
fun spots. He’ll be here until about 1792, when he’ll head off to Springfield,
Windsor County, Vermont and then settle in 1797 for good in West Windsor,
Vermont. He’ll be there until he dies in 1825. Lucy will die there a year
earlier.
The
listing is 1-0-3. This family is the Thomas Putnam from Yorkshire, England and
Rosamond Rounseval who were married here in
Washington on September 24, 1787. See page 278 of Eben
Putnam's 1907 book, The Putnam Lineage. I don’t find them in 1800, but would
guess they are in Connecticut. I do him in Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont
in the 1810 census. And, the family is back here in 1820, and then off to
Delaware County, New York by 1830.
Listing
is 1-0-3. He is number 208, a son of Elisha Putnam (52) and his second wife
Susannah Fuller of Salem Village and then Sutton, Massachusetts. Stephen was
born in Sutton April 4, 1728. He married Mary Gibbs of Sutton March 14, 1755,
and came to Winchester in about 1760. Most of his children are now in Vermont
and New York, but his son Solomon is nearby here in New Hampshire. Stephen’s
line goes back Stephen > Elisha > Edward > Thomas > John Putnam.
Listing
is 1-2-3. He is a son of Cornelius Putnam (339) and Elizabeth Perkins. He was
born January 13, 1756 in Sutton, Worcester County, Massachusetts and then
traveled to Stafford, Tolland County, Connecticut with his family. Sutton is
just above the Connecticut border and Stafford is only a few more miles into
Connecticut. In Stafford, he married Sarah Colburn on November 26, 1778. He
served in the Continental line of Connecticut and was in many battles. After
the War, he moved to Hanover and will remain here until his death on March 4,
1838. The two sons at home are Cornelius and John Adams. His line goes back to
Cornelius (339) > Cornelius (127) > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John.
Listing
is 1-1-3. Reuben is the above Aaron’s brother, and a son of Cornelius Putnam.
He was born in Sutton June 5, 1758. He married Mahulda
Cummings in Sutton, Mass on October 13, 1784. He likely went to New Hampshire
at the same time as his brother, which was about 1789. He will be in Hanover in
1800 with his brother, then off to Vermont and then New York.
Listing
is 1-5-2. He is number 791, a son of Ephraim Putnam (287) and Sarah Cram. Both
Ephraim and Sarah died in 1777, but the kids are here. Ephraim was born in
Salem Village, Massachusetts. Aaron was born here in Lyndeborough in 1757. He
first married Sarah Lee, and the first three children were with her. After she
died, he married Phebe Farnham on April 28, 1789. The sons at home now are
Ward, Aaron, William, Calvin and Joseph. Like most the folks here in
Lyndeborough, his line goes to Ephraim > Nathaniel > Benjamin >
Nathaniel > John.
Listing
is 2-2-5. He is another son of Ephraim (287). David is number 789, and was born
here March 6, 1753. He married Abigail Carlton, widow of John Johnson. They
were married June 18, 1778. He will die here in 1820, she in 1835 at age 84.
Listing
is 3-1-3. This is another Ephraim all together. He is number 776, A son of
Archelaus Putnam (286) and Mehetable Putnam (416) of
Salem and then Danvers, Mass. Mehetable was a
daughter of Caleb Putnam (162) and Silence Philips of Salem. There have been
numerous instances where Putnam cousins married. This line goes back Ephraim
> Archelaus > Nathaniel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John. Ephraim
was born in Danvers September 14, 1744 and will die here in Lyndeborough on May
11, 1821. He married Rachel Cram in the fall of 1768. In addition to keeping
these two Ephraim separate, also keep the various Cram gals separate.
Listing
is 2-3-3. No, he is not a son of the above Ephraim (776). He is a son of the
‘original’ Ephraim (287) who came here early on. He is number 785, and was born
in Salem Village June 14, 1744. He married Lucy Spaulding. I don’t have a great
deal on this particular Ephraim.
Listing
is 1-2-3. No, he is not the father of the following Archelaus Jr. That guy’s
dad was yet another Archelaus. This one right here is Jacob Putnam (283)’s son.
He is number 769. He was born here in Wilton October 15, 1749. He married Mary
Nichols from Danvers, Massachusetts. He’ll head over to Vermont in a couple of
years with his kids. He will die in Chester, Vermont October 22, 1816. His
sons, Archelaus, Peter and Samuel will remain there in Vermont.
Listing
is 2-3-8. Nope, not a son of the guy above. He is from Danvers, number 774, and
a son of Archelaus (286) Putnam and Mehetable Putnam
(Number 416, a daughter of Caleb Putnam and Silence Phillips of Salem Village).
He always referred to himself as Junior. He married Abigail Goodrich in Danvers
July 15, 1761. This will be his last appearance, as he will die April 14, 1800.
This line is Archelaus (774) > Archelaus (286) > Nathaniel (120) >
Benjamin (23) > Nathaniel (5) > John Putnam (1).
ARCHELAUS PUTNAM 3RD Wilton,
Hillsborough County
Listing
is 1-1-1. Yes, he is indeed a third Archie. He is number 1903, and was born in
Danvers January 16, 1762. The above Archelaus Junior is his father. He married
Martha Hawkins in Danvers on November 12, 1786 just before coming here to the
Granite State. He will be the only Archelaus to still be around for the 1800
census.
Listing
is 2-2-5. He is Jacob Junior (768), son of the founding family of Wilton, Jacob
(283) Putnam and Susannah Harriman from Salem, Massachusetts. Jacob was born
here in Wilton on November 15, 1747, and will die here June 2, 1821. He married
Abigail Burnap here in 1770. The sons at home now are
Jacob, John and Caleb. One of the older gals is his dad’s third wife, Patience,
who he married here in the 1760s. His line is Jacob (768) > Jacob (283) >
Nathaniel (120) > Benjamin (23) > Nathaniel (5) > John (1) Putnam.
Listing
is 1-1-3. She is Mary Snow, the second wife and widow of Nathaniel Putnam (762)
who has just died here May 20, 1790. The numbers are either off or a couple of
the sons are off somewhere. The daughters are okay, and the sons Calvin and
Philip are at home, but Jonathan, Eliphalet and Peter
and not listed, unless the 1 should be a 4 in the middle column. Peter is in
New York as near as I can figure, Eliphalet will be
here in 1800, but have no idea where Jonathan (now age 20) would be.
Listing
is 2-2-2. He is number 316, a son of Stephen Putnam (124) and Miriam Putnam
(number 164, daughter of John Putnam (32) and Hannah) from Salem Village,
Massachusetts. He was born in Salem Village September 30, 1739. He graduated
from Harvard, taught school and moved here to Wilton about 1776. He married
Rebecca Kimball of Boxford, Massachusetts on April 3, 1768. His first two
children were born in Danvers, the last two here in Wilton. This line goes back
Moses (316) > Stephen (124) > Benjamin (23) > Nathaniel (5) > John
Putnam (1).
Listing
is 1-1-6. He is number 765, another son of Jacob and Susanna Putnam. He was
born in Wilton March 4, 1740 and will be here until his death October 10, 1810
(interesting 10/10/10).
He
married Abigail Jaquith June 19, 1764. She died, probably of childbirth
complications, September 4, 1765. He then married Hannah Jacques January 10,
1767. Hannah will survive him and die September 22, 1819. He served in the
French and Indian Wars, and as a Colonel during the Revolution. His line is the
same as Jacob Junior’s.
Listing
is 2-2-4. New Boston is way in the northeast part of the County, and not near
where the other Putnams are living. Just not certain who he is. The most
logical choice is that he is number 779, a son of Archelaus Putnam (286) and Mehetable Putnam of Salem Village. Two of Archelaus’ sons
are in the area. Archelaus Junior in Wilton and Ephraim in Lyndeborough. Based
on the age in 1800, he would fit nicely. He was born in Danvers November 21,
1749. Eben has nothing on him, but I’ll just have to
bet that this is the right Jacob. His wife is named Lucy. He will die here in
1826 and Lucy in 1837.
Listing
is 2-2-7. He is number 766, another son of Jacob Putnam. He was born in Wilton
February 28, 1744, and married Miriam Hamblett here in 1763. He moved from
Wilton to Temple around 1770 and then to Society Land (now the village of
Bennington) in 1782. He operated a gristmill, a sawmill and other operations on
the Contoocook River. He remained there until 1820 when he went to Marshfield,
Vermont with his son Jacob. Joseph died there on November 17, 1826. Miriam died
there February 12, 1836.
Listing
is 1-1-2. Yes, the son of the above Joseph. He is number 1870, born in Wilton
on December 6, 1763. He married Rebecca Burton November 28, 1787.
Listing
is 1-2-6. The last of Jacob’s children. He stayed in Temple on the old farm
after the rest moved on to Society Land. He is number 764, born back in Salem,
Massachusetts September 24, 1744. He married Olive Varnum in Andover on October
18, 1764. The IGI has a listing that states it was Andover, Massachusetts, but
I would guess it was Andover, New Hampshire. This family will be moving shortly
to Rumford, Maine and will remain there.
In
1800, both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and
over. Again I am listing these folks by County and by page number proximity to
each other.
10110-00010.
He is number 548, a son of Stephen Putnam (208) and Mary Gibbs of Sutton,
Massachusetts. His line goes John > Stephen > Elisha > Edward >
Thomas > John. He was born in Winchester, New Hampshire on May 10, 1761 and
will die here in Chesterfield on November 17, 1849. He married Mary Converse in
1801. He spent his youth living with the family of Ebenezer Harvey of
Chesterfield. In 1779, he enlisted in the Army and served in Rhode Island. He
was active in local and state politics throughout his life. Rest of the time,
he just farmed.
11210-30010.
There are two identical listings for him on this page. He is Timothy Junior.
11001-00001.
Seth’s son. He is number 189 and is married to Rachel Weatherbee.
He will die here August 20, 1814.
11011-00111.
This is Tim Senior and Susanna Badger.
41010-00010.
Tim Senior’s son. He was in Vermont briefly in the late 1790s, and is back here
now.
30010-20110.
He is number 458, another son of Thomas and Rachel. He was born here in 1768.
He married Lydia (Durant) Parker, a widow, in 1791.
20110-10100.
He is number 470, a son of Timothy and Susanna. He was born here May 13, 1770.
He married Anna Bailey here March 5, 1795. The older male is probably his
younger brother David who will also marry a Bailey gal here in 1802.
10110-00010.
He is number 456, a son of Thomas and Rachel. He was born here January 31,
1765. He married Susannah Durant March 13, 1794. The youngster is his son
Ephraim born in 1794. The guy around 20 is probably a brother.
32101-32201.
Stephen’s son is still here, and will be until he dies in 1820. The last of his
six sons, Hiram, was just born March 6, 1800.
22110-21210.
Edward’s son. Caleb and Judy have been here since 1778. Judith will die here in
1811. He will then marry Freelove Elliot November 21,
1811. She will die here in Croydon on February 11, 1813. Caleb will then move
to Southborough, Massachusetts and marry a widow Submit Fay there on January
24, 1814. They will be there in 1820 and she will be widowed there in 1830. All
the kids will remain here in New Hampshire though.
20101-11301.
Caleb’s brother, Edward’s son. Been here since right after the War.
Listing
is 11010-00100. He is number 457, one of Thomas and Rachel’s kids. He was born
in Charlestown June 29, 1766. He married Polly Whipple about 1791.
Listing
is 01410-22011. He is not one of Thomas’ kids. He is number 437, a son of
Samuel Putnam (176) and Sarah Nurse of Salem Village and then Lunenburg. He was
born June 1, 1761. He married Betsy Fayton in
Lunenburg. She died after the birth of their first child. He then married Lucy
Redington on October 4, 1787, also in Lunenburg. The family moved up here in
1790 as his son Thomas was born here June 19, 1790. He ran a tavern here in
Langdon from 1796 until about 1809. He then moved the family southwest to
Covington, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He isn’t in either the NH or PA census
for 1810, so was probably on the road. He is there in 1820 and will die there
on August 11, 1825. His only son, Thomas, will marry and remain there all his
life. This line is Elijah > Samuel > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas >
John.
40010-20010.
He is number 1904, son of Archelaus Putnam (774) and Abigail Goodrich of
Danvers, Massachusetts. Caleb was born in Danvers on November 24, 1763. He
married Hannah Russell in Middleton, Massachusetts on September 27, 1784. About
that time, his folks moved to Wilton, New Hampshire. Caleb is in Topsham, Maine
in the 1790 census, and they are in Newburyport in the mid 1790s and then here
around 1795. Caleb will eventually settle on the coast in Newburyport,
Massachusetts and they are there in 1800 and onwards.
00011-10201.
Stephen and Mary are still here. He’ll be dying here in two more years.
10101-10201.
He is number 554, a son of the just above Stephen. He was born in Sutton,
Massachusetts March 22, 1773. I don’t know his wife’s name, but it might be
Sarah Monaham. Eben says
they had fourteen children by 1817, twelve of which had died by then.
11210-20210.
Cornelius’ son is still here and will remain here forever. He is married to
Sarah Colburn.
41010-11010.
He’s Aaron’s brother and has moved here from nearby Lebanon recently. He is
married to Mulhuldah Cummings. He will be in Orange
County, Vermont then off to Genesee County, New York by 1820.
01001-00101.
He is the last Archelaus left in town. He is number 769. He and Mary Nichols
will head over to Vermont in a couple of years with his kids. He will die in
Chester, Vermont October 22, 1816.
10110-11111.
He is number 1843, a son of Nathaniel Putnam and his first wife, Mary Eastman.
He was born here January 23, 1766, and will die here February 24, 1826. He
married Dorcas Abbot here February 3, 1795. The older woman is possibly his
stepmother Phebe, Nathaniel’s second wife.
11111-10211.
Jacob junior and Abigail. In addition to all his other kids, his son Jacob has
married Mary Burton (January 14, 1796) and they are living here too.
00001-00101.
Stephen’s son is still here.
00201-01002.
He is Jacob’s son.
30110-00110.
He is number 846, a son of Moses Putnam. He was born in Danvers May 20, 1772
and will die here in 1821. He married Sarah Burton on September 19, 1797. Based
on the stats, a brother and sister or brother’s wife are living here too. He
runs a grist mill at Barnes’ Falls in Wilton, part of her daddy’s lands.
20200-00200.
He is number 1877, son of the following Joseph Putnam. He married Sarah Barnes
in Litchfield on September 19, 1798. There is another couple or two siblings
with him.
00101-01110.
Jacob’s son still here.
10210-10110.
He is number 1766, a son of James Phillips Putnam (730) and Mary Herrick of
Salem Village. He was born there January 4, 1772. He married Desire Felton in
Danvers in 1798. They were in Danvers till 1799, here now until about 1806, and
then back to Danvers where he will die in 1848.
34010-31110.
He and Phebe Farnham are still here.
10010-20100.
He is number 1930, a son of Ephraim Putnam (785) and Lucy Spaulding. He was
born here September 2, 1770. He married Hannah Johnson August 28, 1794.
01101-11002.
He’s a son of Ephraim (287), and was born here.
02001-00101.
He’s number 776. A son of Archelaus Putnam and Rachel Cram. See 1790 for this
line.
10020-00010.
Even though he lists himself as Junior, he is real the third Ephraim in this
line. He is a son of the elder Ephraim (785) and Lucy Spaulding. He is number
1929 in Eben’s works. He married Elizabeth Carkin
here on November 6, 1794. His father has recently died (1799), his mom is
listed shortly.
20010-00010.
He is number 1908, a son of Ephraim (#776). He was born here September 14, 1769
and will die here in 1843. He married Mary Hildreth here November 21, 1791.
00000-00101.
She is Lucy Spaulding, widow of Ephraim Putnam Sr. (785), who died here in
1799.
20010-10010.
He is number 2199, a son of Nathan Putnam (933) and Hannah Putnam (a daughter
of Dr. Amos Putnam) of Danvers, Massachusetts. Nathan Jr. was born in Danvers
on March 18, 1773. He married Lucy Blanchard, also in Danvers, on October 27,
1793. He’ll be here in Milford through the 1840 census, and several of his
children will be here in 1850 and later. This line goes Nathan (2199) >
Nathan (933) > Jonathan > Jonathan > Jonathan > John > John
Putnam.
22101-12101.
He was here in 1790. He is number 779, a son of Archelaus Putnam (286) and Mehetable Putnam of Salem Village. Based on the age in
1800, he would fit nicely. He was born in Danvers November 21, 1749. He will
die here in 1826, Lucy his wife in 1837.
10010-20011.
He is number 620, a son of Nathan Putnam (224) and Elizabeth Buffington. He was
born in Sutton September 3, 1771. He married Anne Hodgkins
in Sutton about 1795. They will be in Peterborough in 1810. He is a scythe
maker. This line goes back John > Nathan > Isaac > Edward > Thomas
> John.
In
1810 both male and female categories are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44,
45 and over. Again, I am listing by county and proximity to each other in the
census pages.
10011-30011.
He is ‘combined’ in the listing for his father Joseph. The entry reads Jos
& Jacob Putnam. Jacob is number 1880. He was born in Society Land March 18,
1784. He has recently married, but living with his folks. Hence the dual name
listing.
10011-30011.
Joseph has moved up ‘North’, leaving his farm to his son Gideon. His youngest
son, Jacob is living here with him.
01101-30111.
He was here in 1800. In 1779, he enlisted in the Army and served
in Rhode Island. He was active in local and state politics throughout his life.
Rest of the time, he just farmed.
00201-00001.
Thomas’ son. He and Susannah were here in 1800, and he has been here since
birth.
00001-20010.
Another on of Thomas’ sons. His wife is Lydia Durant.
22310-10010.
A son of Timothy Sr. He bounces back and forth between Windsor County, Vermont.
He was there in the late 1790s, but back here by 1800. He’ll head to Vermont
again, have some kids around 1811, serve in the War of 1812 from there, yet be
back here in 1820. In 1830 he will be in Vermont and finally show up in a
census report.
10010-11210.
He would be number 452d, a son of Thomas Putnam (189) and Rachel Weatherbee. He was born in Lunenburg, Worcester County,
Massachusetts on February 27, 1758. Eben had nothing
on him. Also his folks should be listed, but aren’t. Thomas Sr. doesn’t die
until 1814 and Rachel not until 1812. They are nearby somewhere. Anyway, this
Thomas is married to Mary Young, the son shown here is Orson Dean Putnam, born
in 1807. Thomas will be here until he dies in 1836. I don’t find Mary listed in
1840, but I find Orson here in 1850. I assume both Tom and Polly will die by
1840, and the kids will be brought up by kinfolk.
00010-20100.
He is number 1158, a son of Timothy (465) and Sarah Putnam. He was born here
July 27, 1783. It appears he went over the line into Vermont with his brother
Timothy. There he married Sarah Gill of Springfield on December 21, 1806. The
two daughters, Thankful and Sarah, may have been born there or here. They will
soon move to or back to Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont and will be there
in the 1820 census and stay there all his life.
02300-31110.
He is number 1365, a son of Solomon Putnam (545) and Miriam Elmer. He was born
in Claremont August 11, 1787. His folks are currently in the area, but not in
the index. I have nothing more on Chester, no wife, no nothing. This is the
only listing I find for him in New England. I think he died fairly early on.
00110-20011.
He is number 626, a son of Daniel Putnam (228) and Anna Chase of Sutton,
Massachusetts and then Cornish, New Hampshire. In fact Daniel just died in
1809, and the elder woman here is Sam’s mother Anna. Samuel was born here in
Cornish in 1764. He married Lois Liscomb here in
1791. The son shown here is John Liscomb Putnam born
March 16, 1792. The daughters are Sarah Maria and Anne Elizabeth.
21110-12010.
He’s number 628, Sam’s brother and another son of Daniel and Anna. He was born
here in Cornish July 13, 1770. He married Mary ‘Polly’ Chamberlain here March
26, 1793. The sons are Alexander Clark, Norman W., Solon. The other male might
be his brother Daniel. They were in Rochester, Windsor County, Vermont in 1800,
and will be in Claremont by 1820, and then off to Ohio.
00101-02001.
This is Caleb Senior (492) and Judith Sibley. His son Caleb married here in
1800 and by 1803 headed to Marshfield, Vermont where he is right now.
10100-01100.
He is Caleb’s son, number 1242. He was born here in Croydon on March 28, 1785.
He married Sukey Gibson here on November 13, 1808.
He’ll be here through the 1820 census, but will venture out to New York in the
1820s and into Illinois in the 1830s and then return to Troy, New York where he
will just stay put.
10010-10010.
He is number 1228, a son of David Putnam (491) and Phebe Woodbury. He was born
in Sutton, Massachusetts September 30, 1799 and came up here with his folks in
the 1780s right after the Revolution. Solomon married Rebecca Putnam Prescott
(1218), daughter of John Putnam (483). They were married here September 20,
1805. He’ll be here all his life.
02101-00201.
Solomon’s dad, number 491. He will be here until he dies in 1840. Phebe, till
she dies in 1839.
00101-10100.
Cornelius’ son came here in the 1780s from Connecticut, and will be here all
the rest of his life. He is married to Sarah Colburn.
10010-10100.
He is Aaron’s son. He was born here in May 1783. He has married Bridget Nevins
on April 3, 1805, and is off on his own.
There
was an X written in with no listing. This would be John Adams Putnam, son of
Aaron. He was born here July 15, 1787, and married Anna Bliss West November 23,
1806. They had one child, Alvan. Anna died June 20, 1807. He’ll marry Sarah
Heath here on March 6, 1811 and will be here through the 1840s, when he will
head to Madison County, Ohio.
21110-20110.
He’s a newcomer, moved here from Danvers a couple of years ago. He is number
1767, a son of Dr. James Phillips Putnam (730) and Mary Herrick of Salem
Village and then Danvers, Essex County, Massachusetts. Rufus was born in
Danvers on July 19, 1774. He married Mary ‘Polly’ Felton there on February 19,
1800, and moved here a couple of years later. He’ll be here until he dies on
May 12, 1855. He hasn’t been married long enough to have children as old as are
shown here. There is a couple in their 20s or early 30s here and they will be
here again in 1820, but gone by 1830. This line goes back Rufus (1767) >
James (730) > Amos (271) > John > John > Nathaniel > John.
31201-11201.
He and Phebe are still hanging in there, and adding kids like crazy.
11010-12010.
Ephraim’s son and his wife Hannah Johnson have been here since they were
married; Daniel since the day he was born.
10101-00203.
Another of Ephraim’s sons who was born here.
00201-00110.
He is indexed as Elephalet and the next guy as Eliphalet, Jr., but we know that’s not right. Right? There
is indeed an Eliphalet but he is in Wilton, always
was and always will be. Anyway this
Ephraim, number 776, as I told you earlier is Archelaus’ son.
20010-00110.
He’s not Eliphalet Jr. (though indexed as such), nor
is a son of the above Ephraim. He is number 1929, a son of the original Ephraim
who has long since gone to meet his maker.
Listing
is 21001-00010. He is number 1908, a son of Ephraim Putnam (776) and Rachel
Cram. He was born here September 14, 1769. He married Mary Hildreth here on
November 21, 1791. They were here in the 1800 and will be in 1820 still. He was
indexed as Puteram in this census.
20010-00010.
He is number 1935, a son of David Putnam (789) and Abigail Carlton. He was born
here July 19, 1781, and married Rachel Dascomb in
1807 here in Lyndeborough. They will be here through 1830, and he will still be
here in 1840 with his second wife Patty Cheever. He will die in 1847.
22210-21011.
Look back to 1800 for his line.
10010-00100.
He is a son of the following Jacob.
00001-00201.
Still here. Number 779, a son of Archelaus Putnam (286) and Mehetable
Putnam of Salem Village. Most of the sons are now gone. Archelaus and Aaron are
across the NY border in Clinton County. Jeremiah has his own family now here in
town.
12110-31010.
Joseph’s son. He and his wife Sarah have moved over from Hancock.
30010-20010.
Okay, as far as I know, there was only one Gideon here. Again
some clerical mess-up. I am not certain which is the correct listing.
01010-51010.
He and Anne were in New Ipswich in 1800. He is a scythe maker.
The listing is 00010 10201. He is Jacob Putnam number 1690, son of Daniel Putnam (705) and Elizabeth Oberlock of Ashburnham, Massachusetts. He was born there in 1782. Jacob just married Lucy Brooks on 19 Feb 1810 in nearby Mason, New Hampshire. Jacob should be superintending the construction of a factory here in Peterborough. Once that factory is complete Jacob will move on to Walpole where he will appear in 1820. Jacob dies before 1830 and his widow Lucy Brooks will be in Walpole in 1830.
10110-20010.
He is number 1773, a son of Andrew Putnam (734) and Mary Page of Danvers. He
was born there June 2, 1777. He’ll be around a while, first in this neck of the
woods, and then in Claremont.
01110-10100.
He is number 849, a son of Moses Putnam (316) and Rebecca Kimball of Wilton. He
was born here January 11, 1784. He’ll be here all his life. He married Mary
‘Polly’ Shattuck of Temple on December 12, 1808. As of now, he only has one
daughter, Mary Russ. The others are probably his siblings or relatives of
sorts, as both his folks are now dead. The next eldest is his brother Moses, no
ideas on the other two youngsters.
10010-01110.
He should be number 1886, a son of Jacob Putnam (768) and Abigail Burnap. He was born here March 24, 1779. He married Lydia
Spaulding, who should be his wife now, and in a year or two will marry Jane
Longley here in Wilton.
21110-21110.
He would be number 1884, another son of Jacob and Abigail. He was born here
November 24, 1775. He married Mary Herrick July 7, 1803. There are way too many
people here, must be another family living here with them.
01001-00021.
Not indexed, but on the page. Been here since he was born in 1747.
31210-01010.
Also not in the index, but on the page. He was born here long time back. He
will die in 1826, Dorcas will outlast him.
01101-00010.
Jacob’s son. Been here since he was born in 1742.
20010-20010.
Moses’ son is still here running his mill.
01011-11201.
A new comer. He is number 1455, and is a son of Oliver Putnam (577) and Sarah
Lake of Danvers, and then Newbury, Massachusetts. Oliver was brought up in
Newburyport, and engaged in worldwide trade. He retired and moved here to
Hampstead, which is just up river and across state lines from Newburyport.
He’ll be here until he dies July 11, 1826. This line goes back Oliver >
Oliver > Oliver > Joseph > Edward > Thomas > John Putnam.
In
the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and
older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
Once
again, I’ll list by county and then by proximity to one another in the census
listings.
000200-00100.
This town is just across the Connecticut river from Essex County, Vermont. I
assume William is connected to one of the families that were in that part of
Vermont. There is a George Putnam nearby in Guildhall, Vermont. That George is
a son of Abel Putnam and Polly Whipple of Charlestown, New Hampshire. He will
be here in Coos County in 1830 (but not listed) and 1840 (Listed). William
should also be a son of Abel (457) and Polly. Eben
didn’t have any of their children listed.
110101-01001.
He is number 466, a son of Timothy Putnam (191) and Susannah Badger. He was
born in Charlestown June 14, 1762, married Ruth Spencer November 15, 1789 and
headed over to Weathersfield, Windsor County, Vermont in the 1790s. He has
returned to this side of the river and his sons Lewis and Asahel will be born
here. He will then head back to his birthplace, Charlestown, where he will die
in 1848, while living with his son Orrin.
010111-01101.
He is number 445, a son of Ebenezer Putnam (184) and Mary Parker. He was born
here in Charlestown on February 11, 1757. He married Rebecca Holden, also of
Charlestown, on March 29, 1784. Then in about 1786, he and his brothers
Ebenezer, Seth, and Jacob all moved to Middlesex, Washington County, Vermont.
He has been there, and must have returned here by 1814, as his son Parker died
here in 1814. He will remain here until he dies February 22, 1836.
000001-00101.
I have no idea really here. He is not a part of the various other families here
in Charlestown. He was not here in 1810 nor will be here in 1830. A possibility
is that he is Dr. James Philips Putnam of Danvers, Massachusetts. That James
was born in Salem on April 21, 1745, and married Mary Herrick. James Philips’
son Rufus is here in New Hampshire at this time.
010101-12110.
He is Timothy’s son and was born here.
200100-01100.
He is Elisha Durant Putnam, number 1148, and a son of Elisha Putnam (458). He
was born here in Charlestown on February 26, 1797. He married Nancy Melville
here in 1817. He served in the War of 1812 as a musician, and was discharged in
1815. His father also served and died in that war.
100011-10011.
There is a note on the right side of the page that states, “& Abijah
Putnam.” Ephraim is Abijah’s only son. Abijah is number 456, Ephraim number
1145. We told you about Abijah earlier. Ephraim was born here October 10, 1794
and married Prudence Graves here September 2, 1816. Prudence was the widow of
Israel Sanderson. The two older people here are his folks Abijah Putnam and
Susanna Durant.
000010-10200.
He is Nathan P. Putnam number 1148, another of Elisha’s sons. Nathan was born
here August 23, 1793. He married Nancy Grinnell of Charlestown on December 31,
1815.
210010-10200.
He is number 1159, a son of Timothy Jr. and Sarah Hewitt. He was born in
Charlestown July 18, 1785 and married Eliza Southard in January 1815.
010301-01202.
This is Tim Junior (465) and Sarah Hewitt. He was born here and will die here
in the mid 1830s.
000001-00110.
This is not Thomas Senior as he died here in 1816. This is his son Thomas
(452d) and his wife Mary Young. He was here in 1810 and will be till he dies in
1836.
110201-11311.
He is a son of Stephen Putnam of Sutton, Massachusetts and has been here most
all his life.
110002-10101.
He is number 628, the son of Daniel Putnam and Anna Chase of Cornish. He was in
Cornish in 1810. His wife is Polly Chamberlain. They will next head off to Ohio
with the two sons Norman and Isaac junior. Isaac will die in Knox County, Ohio
in 1849.
000310-20011.
He is number 1363, a son of Solomon Putnam (545) and Miriam Elmer. He was born
in Claremont March 2, 1784. He married Hannah Whipple of Charlestown. She will
die soon, and he will marry Esther Richards. The older woman shown here is his
mother Miriam.
010110-00100.
He is number 1515, a son of Putnam (628). Isaac is now in Claremont, and looks
as if Alex has taken over the family farm. He was born in Cornish January 26,
1796. He has just married Beulah Barber on March 6, 1820 in Brattleboro,
Vermont just across the river. In 1830, they will be in Saco, York County,
Maine and in 1840 will be in Guilford, Windham County, Vermont. I don’t find
him in 1850, but boy this guy could get around, so he might be anywhere.
000011-01102.
He is another son of Daniel and Anna. He was born here in 1764. His wife is
Lois Liscomb. His mother Anna is still living with
them. The older male is his son John Liscomb Putnam.
010010-20010.
He is number 1244, a son of Caleb Putnam (492) and Judith Sibley. He was born
here in Croydon March 5, 1791 and will be here all his life until he dies May
15, 1864. He married Rachel Barton, widow of a Chapman guy.
100010-00100.
He is number 1245, another of Caleb’s sons. He was born here on August 16, 1795
and will be here until he dies in 1881. He married Martha Winter of Grantham
June 3, 1817.
210110-20020.
Yes, another of Caleb’s sons. Sam is number 1242. He’s been here all his life.
All these kids of Caleb are remaining here, but Caleb has remarried and gone
back to Massachusetts. He is there in Southborough in 1820 and his widow Submit
Fay is there in 1830.
210010-21210.
He is number 1228, son of the following David. He’s been here a while.
100111-00001.
David is 491 and has been here since about 1781.
300010-10010.
He is number 1243, a son of Caleb and Judith. He was born here December 12,
1786, and married Lydia Melandy. He is currently a
selectman here in Croydon. He’ll be here a few more years and then will move to
Lake County, Illinois and remain there.
001201-01001.
He is number 1083, a son of Peter Putnam (421) and Lydia Endicott of Danvers,
Mass. He was born there September 20, 1762. He was in Gardner, Massachusetts in
the 1810 census, and then moved up here. His current wife is, I believe, still
Anna Penniman. They were married in Gardner in 1793. There is no record of a
divorce, but he will marry Sarah Priest Capron in 1822. Anna will not die until
1843, and she and these sons will be back in Gardner shortly. He will be here
until he dies September 1, 1840 at age 78.
110010-31210.
He is number 452, a son of Ebenezer Putnam (184) and Mary Parker of
Charlestown. He was born there December 27, 1775. He married Sarah Willard. He
briefly lived in Montpelier, Vermont and was there in 1800.He was in Hartland,
VT in 1810. After serving in the War of 1812, he moved over here to Unity. They
will be here in the 1840 census.
100110-40110.
This is Jacob Putnam number 1690, son of Daniel Putnam (705) and Elizabeth Oberlock of Ashburnham, Massachusetts. He was born there in
1782, and married Lucy Brooks. He is a construction supervisor and mechanic. He
worked on factories throughout the southern New Hampshire area. His widow, Lucy
will be here in 1830.
000010-10100.
I think he is a son of the following Thomas. See that listing for who they
probably are.
Listing
is 100001 00001. See page 278 of Eben Putnam’s 1907 book, The Putnam Lineage. This family would be Thomas Putnam from
Yorkshire, England and Rosamond Rounseval who were
married here in Washington on September 24, 1787. They were here in the 1790
census. I don’t find them in 1800, but I do have him in Springfield, Windsor
County, Vermont in the 1810 census. Not sure why he would come back here, but
he is not in Vermont at this time, so this is probably him and the above John
his son who will shortly head to Boston, Mass. Rosamond was from Washington,
and there is an older Rounseval family here headed by
Alden Rounseval (listed 110001-01002). Having the
extra older woman makes me think that maybe her dad just died or her mom is ill
and they simply left their farm in Vermont and came back here to help out. By
1830, I think he is the one in Kortright, Delaware
County, New York. Thomas will return to Springfield, Vermont and die there in
1831 according to bible records. His kids are in New York in the 1840.
100010-11010.
He is number 1759, a son of the following Amos. He was born February 17, 1782
in Salem, Massachusetts. He married Susan Rebecca Wheeler in 1808. They’ll be
here through the 1850 census.
110001-10011.
Amos (729) has moved from Fitchburg, Mass. and will remain here. He is a son of
John Putnam (270) and Ruth Swinnerton of Danvers (Salem Village), Mass. He
married Lydia Hovey back in 1781. He will be here until he dies in 1841, Lydia
will die here in 1834.
The
1820 census for Grafton County no longer exists. Sorry, but you’ll have to
guess who is here until the 1830 census. Folks I know are here are Aaron, his
sons John Adams, David and Cornelius in the Hanover area. But by 1830, there is
a whole new group up in ski country from Campton to Franconia. Don’t know when
they arrived. Hardly know who half of them are.
100011-10101.
Matt Putnam figured him out. He is Joseph the 3rd, a son of Joseph
Putnam and Rebecca Burton. He was born in Wilton on January 4, 1790, and then his
folks moved to Milford. Joseph married Lucy Rumrill
of Milford on April 17, 1815. Joseph will sell the farm here in Goffstown to
his younger brother James who will appear here in 1830. That same year Joseph,
Lucy and family can be found back in his home town of Wilton. They are missing
in 1840 but are in Lowell, Mass. in 1850 before heading back to New Hampshire
where they appear in Milford in 1860. His line is Joseph > Joseph >
Joseph > Jacob > Nathaniel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John.
311011-00201.
He and Polly Felton are still here and will be through the 1850. He will die
here in 1855, and Polly about the same time.
101110-01110.
He is a son of Jonathan Putnam and Lucy Lane. He was born in Rindge, N.H. on
January 5, 1780. His father Jonathan is in West Windsor, Windsor County,
Vermont at this time. Jonathan was from Bedford, Massachusetts. About the time
Jonathan moved to Vermont, Elijah went back to Bedford. There he married Lucy
Weber on April 28, 1803. Lucy will die in the early 1830s, and he will marry
Hannah Lane in 1838. He and Lucy will be here in 1830 and he and Hannah in 1840
and 1850.
000101-00101.
He is number 1870, a son of Joseph Putnam (766) and Miriam Hamblett of Wilton.
His folks have gone over the line into Vermont with his brother Jacob. Joseph
and his brother Gideon have remained in New Hampshire. This Joseph was born in
Wilton December 6, 1763 and will be here until he dies in 1861. He married
Rebecca Burton in Wilton on November 28, 1787. They will be here in 1830,
through 1850, but they are not in the 1840 nor 1850 indices.
420010-01110.
He is Joseph and Miriam’s son, number 1877. He and his wife, Sarah Barnes, were
in Nottingham in 1810.
200111-12010.
No ideas here. He is not here in 1830. He is probably the one along with Israel
in Fishersfield in 1830.
01001 03101. He is number 1773, a son of Andrew
Putnam (734) and Mary Page of Salem Village (Danvers), Massachusetts. Israel
was born June 2, 1777 and will die September 8, 1860. They’ll be here in 1830
and in 1840 and 1850 in Claremont, Sullivan County. Fishersfield is a town that
no longer exists as it was renamed Newbury in 1837 and is doing just fine
today. Israel was Postmaster in Newbury for that matter.
010001-01001.
He and Phebe have gotten most of the kids out of the house by now.
100010-01010.
He is number 1948, another son of Aaron Putnam and Phebe Farnum. He married
Sarah ‘Sally’ Tenney on January 26, 1819. The younger
girl would most likely be his sister. From 1830 on, they will be in Wilmot,
Merrimack County (part of Hillsborough though at this time).
011102-00210.
Ephraim’s son. He and Hannah Johnson were married here and will stay here.
100000-00021.
David has just died, so there is no hash mark out there in the right column.
His widow, Abigail Carlton, will still be here till 1835, when she too passes
on.
110010-10010.
He is number 1937, a son of the above, just expired, David Putnam (789) and
Abigail. He was born here in Lyndeborough on June 19, 1790. I believe he
married Triphena Butler February 7, 1813. However in
the 1850 census, he is married to Abigail Foster some 9 years younger than he
is. All in all he had five wives.
EPHRAIM PUTNAM 2nd Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County
000101-00002.
He is number 1929, son of Ephraim Putnam (785) and Lucy Spaulding. He was born
here August 20, 1764. He married Elizabeth Carkin
here in Lyndeborough on November 6, 1794.
EPHRAIM PUTNAM 3rd Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County
210112-10111.
He is number 1913, son of Ephraim (776) and Rachel Cram of Danvers,
Massachusetts and then here in Lyndeborough. His dad is the other older person
listed here. This Ephraim was born here April 30, 1785. His wife is Esther
Pearson. They will be in Boston for the 1830 census, and then back here for the
1840 and census reports.
010100-10100.
He is a son of Daniel Putnam (1930) and Hannah Johnson. He was born here on
October 30, 1794. He married Ruth Sargent here in 1815.
000010-00011.
Best I can figure is that he is number 1933, a son of Ephraim (785) and Lucy
Spaulding. The two women are his sisters Sarah and Elizabeth. None of the three
ever married.
010201-00101.
He is number 1908, a son of Ephraim Putnam (776) and Rachel Cram. He was born
here September 14, 1769. He married Mary Hildreth here on November 21, 1791.
They were here in the 1800 and 1810 census.
210010-00010.
He is number 1943, a son of Aaron Putnam (791) and his second wife Phebe
Farnum. He was born here in Lyndeborough in 1790. He married Sarah Shattuck.
They will be here through the 1850 census.
200110-30010.
He is number 1935, a son of David Putnam (789) and Abigail Carlton. He was born
here July 19, 1781, and married Rachel Dascomb in
1807 here in Lyndeborough. They will be here again in 1830.
100100-10011.
Best guess is that she is Lucy Styles, widow of Samuel Putnam. Sam was number 1855,
a son of Stephen Putnam (764) and Olive Varnum of Temple, New Hampshire. Samuel
and Lucy were married in Temple in 1794. She also might be Lucy Parks widow of
Andrew Putnam (525) from Sutton, Mass. That Andrew died in Vermont in 1814.
Just not certain.
020001-01101.
Been here since the late 1790s, see 1800 for who he is.
000000-00010.
She is the wife of the Jeremiah Putnam that was here in 1810. Jeremiah
skipped town in 1812 and left Ann living here all alone. Ann will file for
divorce in 1827 but will still be here in 1830. Jeremiah was a son of Jacob and
Mehitable Putnam that were here in 1810. We don't
know Ann's maiden name. Matt Putnam figured her out.
100001-11101.
He is number 590, a son of Joseph Putnam (214) and Mary Porter of Salem
Village, and then Danvers (which Salem Village became). He was born in Danvers
on March 25, 1770 (baptismal date). He married Sarah Tapley in Danvers June 10,
1798. He will be here (near Hudson) until he dies in Hudson in January 1836.
The son shown is John Porter Putnam (1478). After he dies, Sarah will return to
Danvers and die there in 1849.
211110-21010.
He is number 849, a son of Moses Putnam. He was born here. Look back to 1810
for details.
210010-30010.
Jacob’s son. Caleb’s first wife Lydia has died and he has married Jane Longley.
He will be here all his life. Kids start out on their own soon.
110301-30101.
This will be the last appearance of Nathaniel’s son. He will die here in 1826,
his widow, Dorcas Abbott, will be here in 1830 though.
000101-00002.
Jacob Junior was born here, but will die next year on June 2, 1821. His wife
now is Lucy Spofford, a widow. He married her in 1813; his first wife Abigail Burnap had died in 1812.
120101-31111.
He is a son of Jacob and Abigail. Been here all his life, married Mary Herrick.
100020-13010.
This is Philip Junior. Born here, married to Zeba
Shelton.
310101-01010.
Moses’ son, been here a while.
000010-41010.
Plaistow is down on the Massachusetts border near Haverhill. He is number 1980,
a son of Benjamin Putnam (832) and Miriam Flint. He was born in Danvers on
March 20, 1786. He married Nancy Peasley in Danvers,
Massachusetts on February 5, 1804. His sister Ruth has married the Rev. Reuben Peaslee and also lives here in Plaistow. He will be here
until about 1822 when he will move to Vermont. In 1836 they will return to
Danvers. Then about 1838, they moved to Haverhill, Mass. and will remain there till
his death August 27, 1850.
200010-21120.
He is number 1458, a son of Oliver Putnam Jr. (577) and Sarah Lake of
Newburyport, Massachusetts. His brother, Oliver # 1455, was here in 1810, and
should still be here as far as I know. Oliver will be moving back to
Newburyport and will die there in 1826. Thorny will be here again in 1830
through the 1850. He will die here in 1858. Thorndike was born in Newbury,
Massachusetts February 23, 1787. He married Mary Chase here in Hampstead on
November (possibly December) 26, 1815. This line goes Thorndike > Oliver
> Oliver > Joseph > Edward > Thomas > John.
In
the 1830 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10-14, 15-19,
20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
In
1827, the upper half of Cheshire County was split off and became Sullivan
County. Same folks, different addresses. Same thing happened to the top half of
Hillsborough. It became Merrimack County in 1823. There were only four original
counties when New Hampshire was founded, but as people slowly moved in, they
had to break these counties up into more manageable sizes. I’m going to list
Sullivan right after Cheshire, and Merrimack right after Hillsborough to make
it easier to see where these folks now are.
011100001-01001001.
He’s in his 60s now. He is Stephen’s son and has been here for years.
0010000001-0010001001.
Amos and Lydia are now in their 70s, with just a couple of daughters left at
home.
0201001-1010101.
Both Amos and Rebecca are in their 40s.
00013-00001.
All three big guys are in their 20s. Kinda a Frat House here. I’m guessing that
he is number 1813, a son of Daniel Putnam (750) and Mary Putnam, a cousin, of
New Salem, Massachusetts. If so, he was born there in 1803. He married Mary E.
Reed here September 16, 1831. Then I think is the one that appears in
Claremont, Sullivan County in 1840, 1850 and 1860. Mary died June 24, 1834.
Then on October 8, 1835, he married Maria S. Brown, who is with him through the
1860 census. He may have married again in 1866 to Hannah Essick
or Enick. Hannah was originally a Putnam, number
1824, a daughter of Joseph Putnam (752) and Hannah Kellog
also of New Salem.
00000001-00000001.
Both are in their 50s. He is Stephen Putnam and Mary Gibbs’ son, and has been here
most of his life. They will be here in 1840, but not by 1850.
021010001-1101002.
He’s in his 60s, she in her 40s. His current wife is Sarah Priest Capron, they
were married here in 1822. He was here in 1820 with his first wife, Anna
Penniman.
112001-000001.
Both in their 30s.
21-0022001.
She is in her 40s. She is Lucy Brooks the widow of Jacob Putnam (number 1690)
who was here in 1820.
I’ll
list these families here next, as Sullivan was formed out of the top half of
Cheshire County in 1827. The folks haven’t really moved, just got a new zip
code or whatever.
1010010001-110010001.
This is Levi Putnam and Rebecca Holden, but it is listed under his son Hiram.
Levi is number 445, a son of Ebenezer Putnam (184) and Mary Parker. He was born
here in Charlestown on February 11, 1757. He married Rebecca Holden, also of
Charlestown, on March 29, 1784. He will die here February 22, 1838. Rebecca
will die here June 20, 1841 at age 75. Hiram was born here in 1798 and married
Emily Griswold February 1, 1924. He will be here till he dies March 28, 1858
and Emily till October 14, 1854.
00000001-00102001.
Both in their 50s. He is number 471, Timothy’s son and was born here. His son
James is now in Malden, Mass. David and Hannah will join him shortly, and be
with him in 1840. Hannah will die there in 1848, David in the 1850s.
100001001-111001001.
He and Prudence are in their 60s now.
2000001-000001.
He is number 1114, a son of Levi Putnam (445) and Rebecca Holden. He was born
here in 1786, and married Susan Kimball here in February 1823. He’s in his 40s,
she in her 30s. They are in Warren, Washington County, Vermont in 1840 and
1850.
0000001-000001.
He’s number 1366, a son of Solomon Putnam (545) and Miriam Elmer. He was born
in Claremont March 30, 1789 and married Lucia. Cady July 29, 1821. They will be
here through the 1850 census.
102001-00001.
He’s in his 30s. He is not a son of the above John Putnam. For some reason, he
called himself John 2nd, but was a son of Timothy Putnam (465) and
Sarah Hewett. John is number 1165. He’ll be here again in 1840. He was born
here on June 24, 1799. He married Valeria A. Seaver.
He was a selectman and deacon here in town.
101021-101001.
Both in their 30s. He is number 1164, a son of Timothy Putnam (465) and Sarah
Hewitt of Charlestown. He was born here on October 12, 1796. He married Amanda
Holden of Langdon on March 30, 1825.
000001-011001.
Both are in their 30s. He is number 1148, a son of Elisha Putnam (458) and
Lydia Durant. He was born here August 23, 1793 and will be here until he dies
in 1867. He married Nancy Grinnell on December 31, 1815.
0020001-1210001.
In their 40s. He is another son of Timothy and Sarah. He is number 1159, and
was born here July 18, 1785. He married Eliza Southard January 8, 1815.
0000000001-000000001.
He is into his 70s. He is Thomas Junior and has been here forever. He will die
here September 4, 1836. His wife Mary will receive a military pension in
January 1837 for his service in the Revolution.
010020001-000010002.
In their 60s. He is Tim junior and was born here and will die here in a couple
of years. The older couple here is Oliver and Catherine Dinsmore. They were
just married here in March. Thy will soon be off to their own home.
1010001-10200101.
He’s in his 40s, she in her 50s. He’s Solomon and Miriam’s son. Born here.
000012-000001.
In their 30s. He is number 1371, another son of Solomon and Miriam Putnam. He
was born here on May 28, 1798. The other two guys are his brothers Hiram (1372)
and Elisha (1369).
000011001-001020001.
They are in their 60s now. Daniel and Anna’s son was born back in 1764. His
wife is Lois Liscomb.
0000000001-0000200001.
David (491) and Phebe have been here almost forever. They are in their 70s now.
Dave will die on March 21, 1840 and just miss the 1840 census, as will Phebe
who will die here January 4, 1839.
121201-1110001.
He’s 30s, she’s 40s. He is number 1244, a son of Caleb Putnam (492) and Judy
Sibley. His wife is Rachel Chapman.
020011-11001.
He’s in his 30s, she’s younger. He is number 1235, a son of David Putnam (491)
and Phebe Woodbury. He was born here November 11, 1797. He married Almira
French here on April 19, 1821.
000001-200101.
In their 30s now. He is a son Caleb Putnam. He married Martha Winter back in
1817 and was here in the 1820 census.
0011101-0111101.
Both in their 40s (but should be 50s. Again marks in the wrong column). David’s
son, and was born here.
02020001-0121201.
He’s in his 50s, she’s in her 40s. Eben and Mary’s
son was here in 1820 as well. He is number 452.
Since
the 1820 Grafton Census was destroyed, I don’t know how long many of these
folks have been here.
11010001-0120101.
He’s in his 50s. Bear with me on this one. I think the recorder took his name
to be Percy and wrote it out as Purcival. But there
just weren’t any Percys around. On the other hand,
Perley Putnam, number 1020, did live in the Franconia Notch area, and his son
Perley Junior (number 2314) is coming up shortly. Perley was born in Danvers on
December 16, 1776. He was a son of Tarrant Putnam (399) and Sarah Page of
Danvers, Massachusetts. Perley married Mary W. Putnam in Franconia in 1797. Big
help with her last name here. Record shows he was born January 13, 1797 and
died January 20, 1840, and Mary W. born May 29, 1799 and died January 25, 1869.
So……this is NOT Tarrant’s kid at all. Matt Putnam found he is really Putnam
Percival a son of John Percival and Sibbel Fuller and
was born in Middlesex County Connecticut in about 1772 and died here in Campton
in 1842. Additional information found online states that Putnam Percival
married Naomi Burbank and had his own family in Campton, New Hampshire. The
1830 census listing should be him. So it appears that the census taker simply
got his name backwards and he has been Putnam Percival all along. So not a Putnam at all, but I’m
listing him so others don’t get confused. Thanks Matt.
0001001-2010011.
They are in their 40s. He is number 2245, a son of Jethro Putnam (972) and Mary
Holton of Danvers, Massachusetts. He was born in Danvers on October 12, 1789.
He initially took to the sea, and rose to be a commander in the fleet. He then retired,
fairly early on, and took a job as agent for the Franconia Iron Works. He held
this position for some 27 years. He’ll die on September 9, 1867. He first
married Lucy Cleveland Blythe in Danvers on June 24, 1822. She died January 21,
1839, and no females are shown in the 1840 census. He will then marry Mary
Clark Noyes, also in Danvers, on July 18, 1842.
100001-100001.
He and his wife are in their 30s. He is number 1233, a son of David Putnam
(491) and Phebe Woodbury. He was born in Croydon, Cheshire County on October 2,
1790. He married Abigail Cutting back in Croydon on May 5, 1824. In 1840 and
1850, they will be ‘up river’ in Haverhill, New Hampshire.
2222201001-1002110001.
No he doesn’t have that many kids. He is the one in his 40s, his father Aaron
is in his 70s as is his mother, Sarah Colburn Putnam. John is on his second
marriage now. His wife is Sarah Heath. They were married here in 1811. A couple
of siblings are also included here. Good Lord, it must be a very, very large
house!
000001-120001.
In their 30s. Orford is exactly across the river from
Fairlee, Vermont. This guy should be Hiram Smith
Putnam, number 2134, a son of Eleazer Porter Putnam (895) and Rebecca Smith.
Hiram was born in Danvers, Massachusetts on November 14, 1793. By the early
1800s, the family was in Vermont.
220001-000001.
Both in their 30s. He is Perley Junior, number 2314. He was born in Franconia
(or at least near there) on January 13, 1797. He married Mary Cole in Franconia
on April 15, 1822. His folks are listed earlier in Campton. Campton is just
south of Franconia, and Landaff Center is just west
of Franconia. He will die January 20, 1840, and Mary will be listed as a widow
in the 1840 census. She will be in Guilford, Belknap County by 1850. There will
be a Perley 3rd listed there in the 1860 census. This line goes back
Perley > Perley (2314) > Perley (1020) > Tarrant > Samuel >
Eleazer > John > John Putnam. His family bible was on sale on e-Bay in
2008. Didn’t buy it but copied all the births, marriages and deaths. Great
Info.
00-0000001.
Still alone in her 40s. She was alone here in 1820 as well. Jeremiah's
wife, or former wife, is living alone in her 40s. She filed for divorce from
Jeremiah in 1827 but it is unknown whether it was granted. Not even sure if
Jeremiah Putnam is still alive. Ann will be here right up through 1839 when he
lists herself as a Widow and sells land here in New Boston. Then she disappears
herself. This is the last time we see her. Jeremiah was a son of Jacob and
Mehitable Putnam that were here in 1810. In 1840
there is a Samuel Putnam living here in New Boston that may or may not be a son
of Jeremiah and Ann. Matt Putnam figured her out.
ELIJAH PUTNAM Amherst, Hillsborough County
00101001-100010002.
One couple in their 20s and a guy in his 50s, 2 women in their 60s. This is
Jonathan’s son Elijah and his wife Lucy Weber. The other couple is Elijah
Junior, born back in Bedford, Massachusetts on February 16, 1804. His wife is
Catherine K. Perkins. They were married here in Amherst on May 4, 1826, and
have their first daughter, Caroline Frances born in 1828. They will all be here
a while yet. Lucy will die in 1837, and Elijah will marry Hannah Lane in 1838.
211001-000011.
In their 30s. John and Sabrina have been here a while. His dad, Joseph, is
coming up next. John and Sabrina will be in Lowell, Massachusetts in the 1840
and 1850 census. He will die in Lawrence, Massachusetts in 1860.
000000001-000001001.
In their 60s. Joseph (Junior, number 1870) and Rebecca stayed in New Hampshire,
while his dad went to Vermont a bunch of years ago.
JAMES
PUTNAM Goffstown, Hillsborough County
111001-010001.
In their 30’s. He is James Putnam and is married to Elizabeth Saltmarsh. His
line is James-8 (Joseph-7, Joseph-6, Jacob-5, Nathaniel-4, Benjamin-3,
Nathaniel-2, John-1). He was born on 19 June 1797 so the age bracket fits. He
is the son of Joseph Putnam and Rebecca Burton. James and Elizabeth (Saltmarsh)
Putnam had children James Franklin (born 1830) and Sylvanus Bunton (born 1835)
born in Goffstown. James will be in Hookset, Merrimack County, New Hampshire in
1840 and 1850. Mat Putnam figured this out. MANY THANKS MATT.

This is Joseph's home town but he won't stay here long. Joseph and family will be in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1850 and then in Mason, New Hampshire in 1860. His line is Joseph > Joseph > Joseph > Jacob > Nathaniel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John.

THE
PUTNAMS in Merrimack County
Just when you thought half the
folks in Hillsborough County were taken away by aliens, here they are!
Merrimack was formed from the top half of Hillsborough in 1823. These folks
didn’t necessarily move, just got a new address and zip code of sorts. They also
needed a county to hold the capital city of Concord.
JOHN
PUTNAM Chichester, Merrimack County
110001-110001. Both in their
30s. He is number 2204, a son of Nathan Putnam (933) and Hannah Putnam
(daughter of Dr. Amos Putnam). He was born May 20, 1791 in Danvers, Mass. and
married Sally Tapeley of Danvers. He will die here
December 5, 1843.
JOHN
M. (MILTON) PUTNAM Epsom, Merrimack
County
000001-110001. Both in their
30s. He’s number 1330, a son of Reuben Putnam (537) and Elizabeth Mason of
Sutton, Massachusetts. Reuben was a deacon in the local church and for some
reason christened this poor guy Polycarp. Guess had second thoughts and named
him with more thought in mind. John was born in Sutton February 26, 1794. He
graduated from Brown University in Providence and studied Mennonite religion in
Medford, Massachusetts. He was ordained in 1820. He moved to Concord, published
a religious newspaper. In 1827, he was given a church in Epsom. He’ll stay here
till 1830, then take a church in Dunbarton, New Hampshire (he’ll be there for
the 1850 census), where he will remain till 1861. He’ll finally retire and move
to Elyria, Ohio where he will die August 7, 1871. Well, in between, he married Arathusa Brigham of Westboro, Massachusetts on January 21,
1821. She’ll die in Yarmouth, Maine in 1861. Maybe they were on vacation there,
don’t know. He resigned because of ill health in the spring of 1861, she died
in September of 1861.
RUFUS
PUTNAM Hopkinton, Merrimack County
00110001-0000021. In their 50s.
He and Polly have been here since the 1810 census and will still be here in the
1850. He’s a son of James Philips Putnam of Danvers. Mary Felton is his wife.
The older boy is Rufus Jr. He will marry Apphia F.
Clark November 17, 1835 and she will die January 12, 1837. He will then marry
Harriet Emily Bailey April 30, 1839 and they are here in 1840.
ISRAEL
PUTNAM Fishersfield, Merrimack County
00001011-0011101. He is in his
50s, she in her 40s. Look back to 1820 for who he is.
JOHN
PUTNAM Fishersfield, Merrimack County
0100001-201001. He’s in his 40s.
Well, if I am right about the above Israel, then they are probably brothers,
sons of Andrew Putnam (734) of Danvers. He is married to Achsah
Adkins. They are in Dunbarton, Merrimack County in 1860.
BENJAMIN
PUTNAM Wilmot, Merrimack County
1111001 110001. He’s in his 40s now. He and Sally
were in Lyndeborough in 1820 and then moved up here. He’s Aaron’s son and will
be here at least through the 1850 census.
SAMUEL
PUTNAM Portsmouth, Rockingham County
010001-111001. He is in his 30s
as is Betsy. He is number 1025, a son of Eleazer Putnam (406) and Sarah Fuller
of Middleton, Massachusetts. He was born in Danvers June 14, 1794, and will die
in Brooklyn, New York in 1859. He married Betsy Pope of Danvers August 5, 1819.
Betsy’s mom was a Putnam too, and a niece of the General. Sam’s a teacher here
in Portsmouth and has been for about 6 years. In another year, he will head off
to Brooklyn with a friend and establish a school for boys there. He ran the school
until his death. Three of his daughters also became teachers. The son shown
here is Samuel Warburton Putnam age 6 right now.
ISRAEL
W. (WARBURTON) PUTNAM Portsmouth,
Rockingham County
2120001-110111. He’s in his 40s.
He is number 1022, a brother of the above Sam, and a son of Eleazer and Sarah
Putnam. He was born in Danvers, Massachusetts November 24, 1786, and he will
die in cranberry country in Middleborough, Massachusetts in 1868. He married
Harriet Osgood of Andover, Massachusetts December 2, 1815. Harriet, by the way,
will die here in Portsmouth in 1833, and Israel will marry another widow, Mrs.
Julia Osgood on April 29, 1833. Julia was the widow of Sam Osgood, and was an
Osgood herself by birth. They really kept this thing in the family. At any
rate, Izzy was a Congregational minister. He went to Dartmouth, studied law,
but heard the ‘calling.’ He was ordained here at Portsmouth in 1815 and will be
here until he retires in 1835. He’ll then go to Middleborough, and preach till
he dies in 1868. He was pretty good, I guess, as in 1853 Dartmouth awarded him
a Doctor of Divinity degree.
THORNDIKE
PUTNAM Hampstead, Rockingham County
0010001-0020001. He’s in his
40s, Mary in her 50s. Look back to 1820 for this guy’s story.

mom in her 70s. With just initials it’s hard to even guess. Whoever he is, he
is gone by 1850. Windham is way down on the Massachusetts border near Lawrence.
OLIVE
PUTNAM Sanbornton, Strafford County
She gets two listings. She is
listed as a pensioner age 75, and also noted as age 75 living with her son
William. She is Olive Barron, widow of John Putnam of Bradford, Orange County,
Vermont. John was number 792, a son of Ephraim Putnam (287) and Sarah Cram of
Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. John was born in Lyndeborough
in 1760 and moved to Vermont in 1787. He and Olive were there in the 1790
census. Olive Barron was born in Massachusetts, but moved to Lyndeborough where
she married John on November 30, 1783. According to Eben
she won’t die until 1858, which would make her 93 years old/young.

MARY
W. PUTNAM Guilford, Strafford County
01120 1100001. She is widowed in her 40s. She is
Mary Cole, widow of Perley Putnam (2314) they were married in Franconia and
were in Landaff Center a couple of miles away in
1830. He just died here a month ago on January 20, 1840. Franconia, Guilford
and many other towns had early iron works. I would guess Perley worked the pit
mines. She will be here in 1850 and 1860 still widowed. The eldest son is
Perley 3rd, born in 1830. He’ll be here as well through 1860.
LUKE
PUTNAM Acworth, Sullivan County
00001100001 0100022022. Big family. He is a son of Samuel
Putnam (466) and Ruth Spencer. Dad was born here, moved to Weathersfield,
Vermont where Luke was born May 2, 1802, and married Abigail Snow Stearns back
in Vermont. Then Sam moved back to the Charlestown area in the late 1820s or
early 1830s. The guy in his 80s is Sam, one of the gals in her 70s is Ruth.
Don’t know who the three other elderly women are. Samuel will die here December
20, 1848, Ruth will hang in till March 21, 1855. Luke and Abby will be here in

now. They were here in 1830 and will be through 1860.
ELISHA
PUTNAM Charlestown, Sullivan County
0021001 0100001. Both he and Nancy Melville are in
their 40s now. He usually went by Elisha D. I guess the D. stood for Durant,
his mother’s maiden name.

married Emily Griswold February 1, 1924. He will be here till he dies March 28,
1858 and Emily till October 14, 1854.
JOHN
PUTNAM Charlestown, Sullivan County

Both John (1366) and Lucia Cady are in their 40s. Actually he just
turned 51, hashmark in the wrong column.

Different gal every census.
OLIVER

030011 0000010002. He is number 1166, a son of
Timothy Putnam Junior (465) and Sarah Hewitt. He was born here June 5, 1802 and
will be here until he dies on July 17, 1869. He married Catherine Dinsmore on
March 10, 1830. In the 1830 census they were living with his folks. His dad
died about 1835 or 1836. One of the older women is his mother Sarah, the other
might be Catherine’s mom. The other older male is Oliver’s brother Joseph
number 1167.

Orrin was born in Weathersfield, Vermont September 6, 1797, and will marry
Sarah Putnam (2581, and daughter of Abraham Putnam number 1158) here in April
1842. They are here in 1850 and 1860. His father Sam will die here December 20,

(548) and Mary Converse of Winchester and then Chesterfield, New Hampshire.
Charles was born there September 10, 1810. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1830,
and married Dorothy Flagg in Keane on June 23, 1835. She will die here on
August 19, 1841. Charles will be heading to Massachusetts where he will
practice law, work in several insurance companies and then die in Worcester in
1877. The daughter shown, Mary Flagg Putnam, was his only child.
JEREMIAH
P. PUTNAM Claremont, Sullivan County

and Hannah Andrews. They have all been in Fishersfield, Merrimack County up

have moved over here as well. He is married to Lucretia Jones. They are in West
Troy, Albany County New York in 1850. He will be in Kane County, Illinois in
1870 with a new wife Nancy Downer. He will be there until he dies August 15,
1872.
SAMUEL
PUTNAM Claremont, Sullivan County
000101 0000001. He is in his 40s. He is number 1371,
a son of Solomon Putnam (545) and Miriam Elmer. I am not certain who he is
married to, or if he is married. The woman also in her 40s might just be a
sister. There is a marriage record, however, of a Samuel Putnam marrying Mary
R. Dustin somewhere in New Hampshire on June 5, 1837. Right now, I think that
is the Samuel in New Boston though. He is not around in 1850 (or at least not
on the index). In 1860 he has a Susan Wells and her two daughters living with
him. That family is from Maine. Not a clue who they are. Susan is not his wife
and is not a sister. Maybe just boarding.
ZELOTES
PUTNAM Claremont, Sullivan County
11100001 1000101. He is now 55, Esther 48. They will
be here through the 1860 at least.
SUMNER
PUTNAM Claremont, Sullivan County
110001 100101. He is most likely the same guy who
was in Winchester in the 1830 census. He is in his 30s, born about 1803 in New
Salem, Massachusetts. I do know he married Maria S. Brown here in New Hampshire
on October 8, 1835. She is with him through the 1860 census. Look back to 1830
for his history.
ISRAEL
PUTNAM Claremont, Sullivan County
000000001 000010001. Both are now in their 60s. His son
Jeremiah has moved here too. He’ll be here again in 1850, widowed at age 72
from Danvers, Massachusetts, and again in 1860 at age 83. He is a son of Andrew
Putnam (734) from Danvers. Since before 1820 he was in Fishersfield
(Hillsborough and then Merrimack County). He will remain here in Claremont
until he dies on September 8, 1860.
JOHN
L. PUTNAM Cornish, Sullivan County
1100101001 1000120001. He was indexed as John S. Putnam,
but he is John Liscomb Putnam, number 1512, son of
Samuel Putnam (626) and Lois Liscomb. He was born
here in Cornish March 16, 1792, and will die here April 15, 1875. He married
Adeline M. Sumner May 29, 1834. The two older folks are his parents. The other
gal in her 30s is his sister Annie Elizabeth (1514). They will be here in 1850
and 1860.
WILLIAM
H. PUTNAM Cornish, Sullivan County
10001 00001. They are both in their 20s. Best guess
is that he is William a son of William Putnam and Julia Holden from New Salem,
Franklin County, Massachusetts. That guy was born November 30, 1816. Remember
this is nothing but a guess here. He is the only William the right age that
could have an H for a middle initial, and is the right age.
JOHN
PUTNAM Croydon, Sullivan County
1120011 010101. In their 40s. He is David’s son and
was here with his wife Almira in 1830.
JOHN
PUTNAM Croydon, Sullivan County
100101 00001. No, he is not a son of the above John.
The Index states he has a Jr. after his name. The handwriting looks like a J,
but is a G. He would be John Grosvenor Putnam number 2747. That John is a son
of Solomon Putnam (1228), and was born here in Croydon on May 2, 1809 so the
age is okay. He shows up in 1860 using his full name. He married Lydia Kelly
here on May 9, 1837.
PETER
PUTNAM Croydon, Sullivan County
1101001 0200001. He and Martha are in their 40s now.
Been here since the 1820 census, he was born here, a son of Caleb Putnam.
SOLOMON
PUTNAM Croydon, Sullivan County
000020001 000121001. He is now 61, Rebecca, about 59.
Solomon will be widowed here in 1850 at age 72, and living with his son
Charles.
WILLIAM
PUTNAM Croydon, Sullivan County
X00001 01001. In their 20s. Best guess is that he is
William Gibson Putnam number 2779, son of Samuel (1242). That William was born
here February 14, 1814, and moved to Vermont with his folks. Looks like he
returned. They are here again in 1850.
00122001 00110001. They are in their 50s. He is number
1244, a son of Caleb Putnam (492) and Judy Sibley. His wife is Rachel Chapman.
Their daughter Emeline will die June 28, 1842 at age 17. Their son Stillman
died here January 25, 1834. The family will be in Springfield by 1850. Rachel
will die there on February 3, 1959. By the 1860 census, Hiram will have married
another widow, Elizabeth Carroll and be back in Croydon where he started. He
will die there May 15, 1864 at age 73.
BENJAMIN
PUTNAM Unity, Sullivan County
001100001 0001201. Eben’s son has been here a long,
long time. He is now 64. His wife Sally would be 58, so she must be somewhere.
She will be here in 1850 with her son Benjamin Willard at age 68. Benjamin will
have died by then.
